DISAPPOINTED. I don’t know what to say. Right after I posted SIFIE #001. I learned that it happened. I felt it mistimed. I should have been better prepared. But I’m not a professional journalist whose job is to write and rewrite and rewrite an article or column based on a leaked SCOTUS opinion, anticipating the day to click publish. So, now I am writing. Yet, I don’t know what to say. Other than I am so deeply disappointed. My OPINION on when life begins — at conception, viability, or birth — does not factor in that disappointment. MY OPINION ON THAT DOES NOT MATTER. It does not matter to anyone other than the woman who carries the burden. I draw my disappointment from the FACT that women, especially the poor and women of color, are continually being stripped of their rights, autonomy, safety, and, more sinisterly, dignity. Dignity. What should be the most inalienable human right is being systemically diminished. A minority represented by a majority that believes states can decide if you can carry a fetus to term but states can’t decide if you can carry a concealed weapon. They got what they wanted. “Protection of the unborn.” And not the living. Deaths only matter before the first breath of life. It’s not only the clawback of women’s rights. My disappointment extends to further calls for repeals of other rights of privacy, due process, and equal protection. Griswold. Lawrence. Obergfell. Loving. They aren’t on a slippery slope. They are on the table. In the meantime, the Democrats are saying, “VOTE! VOTE!” That is a pedantically limp response. The style which we have come to expect from the left. Citizens pulling a lever in November is not the hear-and-now. What are the Democrats doing today beyond stand-ups and statements? And, what will THEY do tomorrow?
